GENERAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE COURSES

 

Everyday English 10 (E10)

A general course aimed at students who would like to improve their communication skills in English.
The course focuses on all 4 skill areas of the language, together with grammar, vocabulary and
pronunciation. Our trained teachers make use of a number of relevant conversation topics in order to
facilitate students’ learning.
• Course availability: April to October
• Number of sessions: 10*, 20, 30 or 40 sessions a week (1 session = 45 minutes)
• Maximum number of students: 10
• Minimum course duration: 1 week
• 6 levels offered: from Beginner (A1) to Advanced (C1)

 

Everyday English 8 (E8)

Similar to Everyday English 10, but offered over the shoulder months (November to March). The
emphasis here is still on improving the students’ general English usage but with the added benefit of
a smaller class.
• Course availability: November to March
• Number of sessions: 10*, 20, 30 or 40 sessions a week (1 session = 45 minutes)
• Maximum number of students: 8
• Minimum course duration: 1 week
• 6 levels offered: from Beginner (A1) to Advanced (C1)

 

Personalised General English (PE)

This is a tailor-made one-to-one course giving individual attention to participants who would like the
fastest possible route to improving their English skills. The student and course tutor together, decide
which areas to cover, thus making the most of the time at the student’s disposal.
• Course availability: All year round
• Number of sessions: 10*, 15, 20, 30 or 40 sessions a week
• Minimum course duration: 1 week
• 6 levels offered: from Beginner (A1) to Advanced (C1)

 

General English Combi (Combi)

The Combi course is a combination of the above-mentioned language courses. This is ideal for those students
who want to socialise with other students in a classroom setting and at the same time benefit from the
individual attention afforded by a one-to-one course. Students may choose to have individual morning
lessons and group lessons in the afternoon or vice versa.
• Course availability: All year round
• Number of sessions: 30 or 40 sessions a week – various combinations possible
• Minimum course duration: 1 week
• 6 levels offered: from Beginner (A1) to Advanced (C1)
* 10 session courses are only available in the afternoon.

 

EXAM PREPARATION COURSES

 

TOEFL iBT Preparation Course (TOEFL)

ELA is presently the only certified TOEFL iBT test center in Malta, meaning that our TOEFL iBT students
have the added advantage of sitting for their exam on their school premises! This increasingly popular
exam is offered on a monthly basis, thus giving students a much needed flexibility which is not so
readily available with other examination boards. ELA also boasts of the most comprehensive and
up-to-date collection of study material and software on the island, together with tutors specialised
in preparing you for this exam. An excellent pass rate in recent years has ensured a constant flow of
students to our school to follow this course.

IELTS Preparation Course (IELTS)

ELA also offers preparation courses for both the Academic and General Training modules of IELTS.
Our experienced IELTS tutors cover the four skills forming the four sections of the exam using the best
available study material on the market. This course is available both as a group or an individual course.

Cambridge Preparation Courses

ELA is fully-equipped to prepare students for all Cambridge ESOL exams: KET, PET, FCE, CAE and
CPE. Our highly-trained Cambridge tutors will ensure that you get all the necessary exposure to
maximize your chances of a good grade in these sought-after exams. Moreover, our syllabi have
recently been updated to reflect the changes brought in the paper setups of these exams.

BEC and TOEIC Preparation Courses

BEC and TOEIC are the latest addition to ELA’s exam preparation portfolio. Unlike other exams on
offer these are only offered on a one-to-one basis. At the time of going to print, our school is the only
one in Malta to offer any TOEIC preparation courses.

• Number of sessions: 10*, 15, 20, 30 and 40 sessions (individual courses only)
• Minimum course duration: 1 week
• 3 levels offered: from Intermediate (B1 Higher) to Advanced (C1)

 

Exam Combi Courses

The above courses can be combined with our General English courses. These courses consist of 20
General English lessons and 10 afternoon lessons of exam preparation and are aimed at students
who would like to focus on their overall General English skills together with specific areas of exam
preparation courses.

• Total number of sessions: 20 General English sessions and 10 Exam Course sessions

• Minimum course duration: 1 week

• Maximum number of participants: 10 (AM sessions); 6 (PM sessions)

• 6 levels offered: from Beginner (A1) to Advanced (C1)

ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES

 

Business English – Group (BUS)

These rank amongst the most popular courses at ELA, mainly thanks to our experienced Business
English tutors’ ability to teach a highly engaging syllabus in a fun and communicative way. Topics
covered include business correspondence, presentations, business-related vocabulary, CV writing,
negotiations and business phoning amongst others.

• Minimum course duration: 1 week
• Maximum number of students in a group: 6
• 4 levels offered: from Lower Intermediate (B1 Lower) to Advanced (C1)

 

Business English – Executive One-to-One (PSE-BUS)

These executive courses are aimed at the discerning student whose needs go beyond the general
business issues covered in the Business English group course. By means of a detailed needs analysis,
the teacher and student decide together what should be covered during the duration of this course.
The student is also encouraged to bring any material he/she may wish to use in order to make the
course content more relevant their individual needs.

Business Combi Course (BUS Combi)

An intensive course that combines General English tuition in the morning and Business English in the
afternoon. These courses are aimed at those students who would like to maximize on their stay on
the islands by combining brushing up their English, together with learning the language in a business
context.

• Total number of sessions: 20 General English sessions and 10 Business Group sessions
• Minimum course duration: 1 week
• Maximum number of participants: 10 (AM sessions); 6 (PM sessions)
• 4 levels offered: from Lower Intermediate (B1 Lower) to Advanced (C1)

 

Personalised Special English (PSE)

Course participants are offered English language practice in a specific field of their choice. ELA would
require details of the subject in advance so as to allow us to choose the right tutor for the student
in question. Students are also encouraged to bring a selection of their own materials to make the
course more relevant to their needs. Subject areas here include: Medicine, Law, Technical English, IT,
Tourism, Banking, Finance and Engineering. Closed groups may also be organised.

• Minimum course duration: 1 week
• 6 levels offered: from Beginner (A1) to Advanced (C1)

Guardian and Child (GC)

This is a newly-introduced course at ELA, ideal for those who would like to have lessons in the company of the children in their care. After conducting a proper needs analysis with the students,
teachers prepare two lessons that run simultaneously – one for adults and another for children. The
only link between the two is a common theme.
• Course availability: All year round
• Number of sessions: 15, 20 and 30 sessions a week
• Minimum course duration: 1 week
• 6 levels offered: from Beginner (A1) to Advanced (C1) for guardian/s; Beginner (A1) to Intermediate (B1 Higher).

 

Teacher Training Courses (TELT/TEFL cert.)

These courses are available at various times of the year and interested participants are requested to
contact ELA for details. Courses are open to all primary and secondary school teachers of English as
a second language in countries where English is considered a foreign language.
* 10 session courses are only available in the afternoon.

 

OTHER COURSES

 

Junior Programme

These are tailor-made courses for 4 to 12-year-olds, animated by our dedicated teaching staff, who
combine the three important elements of learning, fun and safety in order to provide exciting lessons
in a safe environment. These courses have a totally different syllabus to other adult courses and make
use of various teaching aids to keep our young guests busy. Junior courses are run throughout the
summer months and are subject to availability during the rest of the year.

• Minimum course duration: 1 week
• Maximum number of participants: 12
• 4 levels offered: from Beginner (A1) to Intermediate (B1 Higher)

 

Summer Teen Programme

These courses are run for teenagers during the summer months. Emphasis here is on student-centred
teaching and participants learn through communicative activities. At ELA we try our best to place
teens in class on the basis of proficiency level, different nationalities, age and the right gender balance.
This ensures a high degree of homogeneity, which in itself is conducive to learning.

Senior Courses

Mature students are bound to benefit from this course, which aims to move away from purely academic
teaching and instead combine English with Maltese culture, history and traditions. ELA teachers
entrusted with these classes are themselves mature and well-versed in these areas. As an option,
students may consider combining these courses with ELA’s afternoon cultural tours, thus making their
stay that bit more complete.
